GATE 2027 Registrations: DigiLocker Mandatory for Indian Candidates; Application Date Rescheduled to August 27

The GATE 2027 registration process is set to bring a significant change for Indian candidates: registration through a verified DigiLocker account is mandatory. The examination will be conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), which has introduced DigiLocker-based verification as part of the application process.

However, candidates should note an important schedule update. While registration was initially expected to begin on August 14, 2026, IIT Madras has rescheduled the opening of the GATE 2027 application portal to August 27, 2026. The official GATE 2027 website currently lists September 27 as the last date for regular registration without a late fee and October 5 as the extended deadline with a late fee.

GATE 2027 Registration: What Has Changed?

The most notable change in the GATE 2027 application process is the integration of DigiLocker.

According to the official GATE 2027 portal, DigiLocker registration is mandatory for all Indian nationals. Candidates are advised to create or update their verified DigiLocker account before starting the GATE application.

The system will use information available through DigiLocker to simplify the application process. The official portal says that the following details can be fetched:

  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Mobile number
  • Email ID
  • Profile picture
  • Address
  • Verified ID card number

This means candidates should make sure their personal information is accurate and consistent before beginning the application.

When Will GATE 2027 Registration Begin?

The revised GATE 2027 schedule is:

EventDate
GATE 2027 registration beginsAugust 27, 2026
Regular registration closesSeptember 27, 2026
Extended registration with late fee closesOctober 5, 2026
City allotment notificationJanuary 4, 2027
GATE 2027 examinationsFebruary 6–7, 13–14 and 20–21, 2027

The change from the earlier August 14 registration date was announced by IIT Madras, so candidates should rely on the revised schedule published on the official portal rather than older registration-date announcements.

Why Is DigiLocker Important for GATE 2027?

DigiLocker integration is intended to make identity verification and application-data entry more streamlined. Instead of manually entering several personal details, candidates can have verified information fetched from their DigiLocker profile.

For this reason, simply having a DigiLocker account may not be enough. Candidates should ensure that their account is verified and updated before the GATE 2027 application window opens.

It is also important to check that the candidate's name and date of birth match the details on the valid photo ID that will be used during the examination. IIT Madras specifically advises candidates to ensure that the name entered in the application matches their valid photo ID.

What Should Candidates Do Before August 27?

Candidates can use the additional time before registration opens to get their documents and details ready.

1. Create or update your DigiLocker account

If you do not already have a DigiLocker account, create one and complete the required verification. Existing users should check that their profile information is current.

2. Check your personal details

Pay particular attention to your name and date of birth. Any mismatch between your application and identification documents could create problems later.

3. Keep academic information ready

Candidates should have details of their qualifying degree, college or institute and other academic information required for the application. The official GATE website provides a detailed list of application requirements.

4. Prepare your photograph and signature

Candidates should keep the required photograph and signature files ready in the prescribed format and specifications before beginning the application.

5. Check the revised syllabus

GATE 2027 also brings changes beyond the registration process. IIT Madras has introduced a new Robotics and Automation (RA) test paper and has made changes to certain syllabi, paper combinations and sectional paper codes. Candidates should therefore check the latest syllabus rather than relying on previous-year information.

GATE 2027 Examination Dates

GATE 2027 will be conducted over three weekends in February:

  • February 6–7, 2027
  • February 13–14, 2027
  • February 20–21, 2027

With registration now scheduled to open on August 27, aspirants have an opportunity to use the remaining preparation period to finalize their application documents while continuing their exam preparation.

Don't Wait Until the Last Day

The introduction of mandatory DigiLocker verification makes it especially important for candidates to prepare before the application window opens.

A good approach is to complete the DigiLocker verification, check personal information, prepare documents and review the latest GATE 2027 syllabus before August 27. This can reduce the possibility of encountering avoidable problems when GOAPS becomes operational.

Candidates should also remember that the September 27 regular-registration deadline and October 5 extended deadline are different. Applying during the regular window can help avoid the additional late fee.

GATE 2027 registration is not opening on the originally announced August 14 date. It has been rescheduled to August 27, 2026. For Indian nationals, verified DigiLocker registration is mandatory, making it one of the most important things to complete before applying.

With a revised registration schedule, a new Robotics and Automation paper and syllabus changes, GATE 2027 aspirants should rely on the latest information from the official IIT Madras portal and avoid following outdated registration dates circulating online.

Key dates to remember:
August 27, 2026 — Registration begins
September 27, 2026 — Regular registration closes
October 5, 2026 — Extended registration closes
February 6–21, 2027 — GATE 2027 examinations

For the latest notifications, syllabus updates, application requirements and registration details, candidates should refer to the official GATE 2027 website.
