The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) has achieved a remarkable milestone in agricultural science with the development of Kaveri Vaaman (Trombay Banana Mutant‑9 / TBM‑9) — India’s first-ever mutant banana variety. This achievement marks BARC’s first fruit crop released under its mutation‑breeding programme and adds to its legacy of 72 improved crop varieties released to date.

At first glance, a banana might seem like a simple fruit, but Kaveri Vaaman demonstrates the profound impact of scientific research on real-world challenges, particularly in agriculture, sustainability, and community welfare.
