Celebrating Avid Readers: A Report on Reading Inspiration Day 2023 and Our Top Library Users

15 October - a special day to commemorate the birth anniversary of the Missile Man of India - Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. A day to celebrate that reading can take you to faraway places at a single point of time. A day to cherish books, reading and the bond we share with books; no matter in what form they are - Paper or Kindle.

In honour of Reading Inspiration Day which was celebrated on 17th October 2023, we at St. Francis Institute of Technology are delighted to share the names of our most dedicated library users. These individuals embody the spirit of lifelong learning and exemplify the transformational power of reading. Their passion for books extends beyond the walls of our library, inspiring others to embrace the joy of reading and discover the vast world of knowledge it unlocks.

Rightly so, our Learning and Information Resource Centre (Central Library) celebrated this big with great enthusiasm. The Best Library Users of the last Academic Year were appreciated and felicitated at the hands of our Principal - Dr. Sincy George. On this special occasion, we couldn't be more proud to recognize our top library users for their unwavering commitment to reading:

The whole week, infact, had many interesting activities ranging from Take Away of Books, Exhibition of Rare Books, Slogan Writing to Borrowing New Books on the spot.
Best Library Users for the A.Y. 2022-2023 are:
Category: Students
First Place: Shashank Keny, INFT
Second Place: Pranay Dalvi, CMPN
Third Place: Dylan Dsilva, CMPN

National Librarians Day 2023 - Report

The famous author, R. David Lankes has said,"To be a librarian is not to be neutral, or passive, or waiting for a question. It is to be a radical positive change agent within your community."
To commemorate this true spirit of librarians on the Librarians' Day and to pay tribute to the Father of Library Science in India - Dr. S.R. Ranganathan on 12th August 2023, the Learning and Information Resource Centre (LIRC) of St.Francis Institute of Technology arranged for an exciting Participatory Session for students and faculty members. The main organisers for the event was the Central Library.
Our students from Third Year and Final Year were selected for the event as they are the ones majorly making a mark in the library literally and otherwise with their footfalls and enthusiasm. The fact that they have used the library space and its resources for a maximum period of time throughout their four year course of study only added to our joy in selecting them. These students have interacted personally more with the library staff depending on their reference queries.
The event required participants to work at two levels; one they were encouraged to share their "Expectations from the library" along with the "The things that make me happy in the library are..."

The event was a success given the fact that the library received a wide spectrum of ideas from the bright young minds. All the ideas / suggestions were categorized into Services and Resources. With the intellectual and creative expressions received through the activity titled "The things that make me happy in the library are...", a "Happiness Index" has been derived  for the library.  We are glad to have received such an encouraging response.

Total Number of Participants: 16

Total Number of Suggestions Received: 33

Celebration of National Reading Day - 19th June 2023

"The journey of a lifetime starts with the turning of a page!"
@sfit_engg_official wishes everyone a very Happy National Reading Day!
19th June is celebrated as National Reading Day in India to honour the Keralite teacher, P.N. Panicker. This celebration of reading did not begin until 1996. However, it has grown into a large-scale movement over the years, with many participants rejoicing, learning, imbibing, and celebrating the habit of reading.
Puthuvayil Narayana Panicker is known as the father of the library movement in Kerala. He died on 19th June 1995, after which in 1996, National Reading Day was celebrated as a tribute to the legend. The Ministry of Education of Kerala also observes Vayana Varam (reading week) for the week between the 19th to 25th of June.

The 27th P N Panicker National Reading Day/ Digital Reading Month Celebrations 2023 are being celebrated as previous years in collaboration with Govt. of India, Ministry of Education, NITI Aayog, National Digitial Library of India (NDLI), Govt. of Kerala, P.N. Panicker Foundation, P.N. Panicker Vigyan Vikas Kendra and various other stakeholders from 19th June to 19th July, 2023.
Following activities were conducted to celebrate the National Reading Day from 18 June to 19th July 2023:

1) Take the Pledge at: Reading Day Pledge 2023
Total Pledges taken: 164 (Faculty and Staff: 21 and Students: 143)
An online badge was shared with all the participants who took the Pledge as a recognition of their active and wholehearted participation.

2) Go Fish: An innovative reading game which received active participation from staff and students.
As part of the celebrations, we also invited Book Suggestions and General Suggestions from
all the stakeholders. These suggestions are noted and those feasible will be implemented in
the near future.

3) Memory Game: In the bustling world of libraries, fostering a love for reading among young minds is paramount. Beyond the realm of traditional story time sessions, incorporating interactive and engaging activities can further ignite children's passion for books and spark their curiosity about the vast world of literature. Introducing a memory game centred on books presents a delightful opportunity to not only enhance memory and concentration skills but also deepen children's familiarity with diverse genres and authors.
A memory game was played with the books available in our library. It received active participation from staff members. The objectives of this Memory Game were to improve memory and concentration skills and to learn about different types of books.

4) Book Mark Making Activity: The art of bookmark making offers a delightful and hands-on approach to fostering creativity and self-expression among children. By providing a platform for artistic exploration and personalization, bookmark making activities engage young minds, cultivate their fine motor skills.

Incorporating all the above activities into library demonstrated a commitment to providing engaging and stimulating experiences that nurtured young minds and cultivated a passion for creativity, self-expression, and the joy of reading.

National Reading Day - 2022 Report

Commemorating National Reading Day: A Report on Library Celebrations
In the vibrant landscape of India, National Reading Day stands as a beacon of literary enthusiasm, celebrated annually on June 19th to honour the legacy of P.N. Panicker, the visionary pioneer of the library movement in Kerala. Libraries across the nation embrace this occasion with a fervour of activities, transforming their spaces into hubs of literary engagement and celebration.
SFIT LIRC celebrated the National Reading Day 2022 with a very novel - "Spin a Wheel" activity. We received a huge response from all the students and staff members.
SFITians took up to accept the "Read India Challenge" and participated in the month-long activity - Spin the Book Wheel. The concept was curated by T.E. ExTC student and library committee member - Mas. Ritik Patel.
This activity was aimed at familiarizing out user community to novels, short stories and a vast collection of leisure reading books available in our library. Students and staff were thrilled to spin the wheel and read the book which the wheel decides for them.
Number of Participants: 70
Take the Pledge: Number of Participants: 11
