Celebrating Librarians’ Day – Honoring the Legacy of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan

On August 12th, we came together to celebrate Librarians’ Day, a date that holds special significance in the world of library science. This day marks the birth anniversary of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, widely regarded as the Father of Library Science in India. His visionary contributions laid the foundation for modern library systems, and his famous Five Laws of Library Science continue to guide us in nurturing knowledge and access to information.

A Living Tribute – The Feedback Tree 🌳

To honor his legacy and bring the spirit of continuous growth and engagement into our library space, we created a unique and interactive installation: the Feedback Tree.

  • Leaves on the tree symbolized suggestions from students and staff – ideas for improvement, new additions, or dreams for the future of our library.

  • Flowers represented appreciations – warm acknowledgments of what the library means to our readers and learners.

Have a look at the video!

From first-year students to Heads of Departments, everyone enthusiastically participated. The tree bloomed with creativity, love, and insight – a powerful reflection of the strong bond our community shares with the library.

Some of the beautiful appreciations included:

  • "Librarians are really cheerful, always welcoming.."

  • "It is a wonderful, peaceful place to read, learn and reflect. A great place towards growth mindset."

  • "A very heartfelt thankyou for the vast resources made available to us."

Among the thoughtful suggestions were:

  • “Keep different books on different tables. Students can give reviews on contents in a month. Best Review can be rewarded”

  • “Please keep the AC on.”

  • “Include library hour in students schedule!”

Gratitude to Our Tree Makers 🌱

We extend a heartfelt thank you to Mr. Anant Yadav, our dedicated Library Attendant, and our gardener, Mr. Manoj, whose creativity and craftsmanship brought the skeleton of the Feedback Tree to life. Their collaborative effort provided the perfect canvas for our ideas and appreciation to take root.

This celebration was more than just a tribute—it was a reminder that our library is a living, growing space. It thrives not only because of books and resources but because of the many hands, minds, and hearts that shape it every day.

Thank You!

A big thank you to all students, faculty, and staff who participated and helped us turn this day into a memorable celebration. With such strong community spirit, we are reminded that “a library is not just a building—it is a growing organism,” as Dr. Ranganathan himself once said.

Let’s continue to grow together 🌿

Celebrate National Librarians Day with Us — Share Your Feedback with Leaves & Flowers!

Date: 12th August

Event: Feedback Activity at SFIT Library

National Librarians Day is just around the corner, and at SFIT Library, we want to celebrate by hearing directly from YOU — our amazing students, faculty, and staff!

On the eve of 12th August, we’re launching a special feedback initiative that’s simple, colorful, and meaningful. We invite you to share your thoughts with us using leaves and flowers:

  • Leaves represent your suggestions and ideas on how we can improve the library services, resources, and initiatives.

  • Flowers represent the things you like, appreciate, or want to cheer us on for — basically, a pat on our backs!

This creative and visual way of collecting feedback will help us grow and serve you better while celebrating the spirit of the day.

Why participate?
Your feedback is the heart of progress. Whether it’s a new book you want, more digital resources, comfortable study spaces, or praise for the recent project displays and AI book collections — every leaf and flower counts!

As Swami Vivekananda said:
"Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life — think of it, dream of it, live on that idea."

Your suggestions can become the ideas that shape the future of the SFIT Library!

Where and when?
Look out for our feedback board at the library entrance on 11th and 12th August. Drop your leaves and flowers, and let’s celebrate together!

We’re excited to hear from you and continue making the library a vibrant hub of learning and innovation.

National Librarians Day 2023 - Report

The famous author, R. David Lankes has said,"To be a librarian is not to be neutral, or passive, or waiting for a question. It is to be a radical positive change agent within your community."
To commemorate this true spirit of librarians on the Librarians' Day and to pay tribute to the Father of Library Science in India - Dr. S.R. Ranganathan on 12th August 2023, the Learning and Information Resource Centre (LIRC) of St.Francis Institute of Technology arranged for an exciting Participatory Session for students and faculty members. The main organisers for the event was the Central Library.
Our students from Third Year and Final Year were selected for the event as they are the ones majorly making a mark in the library literally and otherwise with their footfalls and enthusiasm. The fact that they have used the library space and its resources for a maximum period of time throughout their four year course of study only added to our joy in selecting them. These students have interacted personally more with the library staff depending on their reference queries.
The event required participants to work at two levels; one they were encouraged to share their "Expectations from the library" along with the "The things that make me happy in the library are..."

The event was a success given the fact that the library received a wide spectrum of ideas from the bright young minds. All the ideas / suggestions were categorized into Services and Resources. With the intellectual and creative expressions received through the activity titled "The things that make me happy in the library are...", a "Happiness Index" has been derived  for the library.  We are glad to have received such an encouraging response.

Total Number of Participants: 16

Total Number of Suggestions Received: 33
