Held more than 30 years ago, Veena Gavankar’s biography of African-American scientist and agriculturist George Washington Carver, has remained one of the bestsellers in Marathi literature even today.

A gripping story about a man and his determination to succeed amidst hardship and hurdles, the book not only captures the essence of perseverance, but also beautifully portrays how the desire and a thirst for knowledge indeed, does lead to greatness.

Dubbed by the Times magazine in 1941 as the “Black Leonardo”, Carver’s contributions to the fields of botany and agriculture are immense. His courage and conviction, to get an education in spite of growing up in a society ridden with prejudice and reeking with the aftermath of the apartheid, is astutely covered by the author.

Short, simple and neatly written, Gavankar has touched every aspect of the life and struggles of Carver, his achievements and his many talents. Known as the Peanut Man in America and all around the world today, Carver is said to be the man behind the development of the quintessential American spread, the peanut butter. His message - about persevering in the face of adversity and making something out of whatever one has in life - is simply but clearly depicted, and this biography has served as an inspiration to hundreds of Indians all over the country.

Ek Hota Carver, which began as a result of a mother’s search for bedtime stories for her children, has been on the best-selling Marathi literature for over 30 years, from the time it was first published. Soon to be available as an audiobook, Ek Hota Carver has also had the distinction of being run into 34 editions.

गेल्या काही वर्षांमध्ये विविध दिवाळी अंकांमधून प्रसिद्ध झालेल्या प्रसन्न ललितलेखांचा संग्रह. वाचल्यावर म्हणावंसं वाटेल, सहवास घ्यावा सुखाचा!

नारायण मूर्ती यांनी अनेक अडथळे पार करून हे दाखवून दिलं आहे, की भारतात जागतिक दर्जाच्या, मूल्याधिष्ठित कंपनीची उभारणी करणं शक्य आहे. मूर्तींच्या दूरदृष्टी आणि नेतृत्वामुळे नावीन्य आणि उद्योजकतेच्या जगात चमक आली आहे, आपली स्वत:कडे पाहण्याची आणि जगाची भारताकडे पाहण्याची दृष्टी बदलली आहे. व्याख्यानांच्या या संचाद्वारे, व्यवसायामधील मूल्यं आणि नेतृत्वगुणाचं महत्त्व त्यांनी अधोरेखित केलं आहे.

माझ्या पायावर चक्र आहे की नाही ते मला ठाऊक नाही. पण मला येणारे प्रवासाचे योग पाहिल्यावर एखाद्या ज्योतिष्याला पाय दाखवावेसे वाटायला लागले आहे. एक गोष्ट मात्र खरी. मी मायदेशात तसा बैठा माणूस आहे. परदेशात मात्र खूप हिंडतो. अधाश्यासारखा पाहतो आणि ऐकतो. नव्हे, पाहण्यासाठी हिंडतो. कुठे काय ऐकण्यासारखे आहे ते शोधत जातो. आणि जे काही ऐकले-पाहिले ते सांगायची मला ओढ लागते. आणि त्यातूनच माझे हे सांगणे ऐकणारेही भेटत आले आहेत हे माझे भाग्य!

ना वंशाचे, ना भाषेचे, ना धर्माचे, ना राष्ट्राचे असे कितीतरी लोक ह्या प्रवासात यथा काष्ठं च काष्ठं च म्हणतात तसे भेटतात. स्नेहाचा हात पुढे करतात. अकारण मने मोकळी करतात. आपल्या घराची दारे मोकळी करतात. कोण कुठला जर्मन आबिल, कुठली स्कॉटिश ब्रॉमलेबाई, हंगेरीतला गेझाकाका, पोन्नानेनी, डॉ. बेंके योशेफ आणि त्याची थेट पर्‍यांच्या राज्यातून उतरलेली छोटी एस्थेर... पुन्हा दिसणार देखील नाहीत... मन:पटलावर कायमची चित्रित झालेली पॅरिसमधल्या सीनच्या तीरावरची संध्याकाळ, कोण्या जपानी गेशाचा कानात वर्षानुवर्षे रेंगाळणारा तो ‘सायोनाऽऽरा’!...अनपेक्षितपणाने दिसलेला तो रोदांचा ‘थिंकर’... बर्लिनच्या ऑपेराहाऊसमध्ये ‘बार्बर ऑफ सॅव्हिली’च्या नांदीचे अप्रतिम वाद्यसंगीत ऐकताना अर्जेंटिनातल्या मारियाचे डबडबलेले निळे निळे डोळे... प्रतिभेचे थोर देणे लाभलेल्या एखाद्या साहित्यकाराने ह्यातून शब्दांची कितीतरी मोठी शिल्पे उभी केली असती-ती ताकद माझ्यात नाही याची मला जाणीव आहे. हा माझा विनय वगैरे नाही. भव्य कलाकृतींच्या दर्शनातून मला लाभलेले हे शहाणपण आहे. तरीही लिहिल्यावाचून राहवत नाही म्हणून हे पांढर्‍यावर काळे.

Marathi Bhasha Diwas Celebration

Marathi Bhasha Diwas is celebrated in honour of Marathi language.

SFIT NSS in collaboration with the Learning and Information Resource Centre celebrated ‘Marathi Bhasha Din’ on the occasion of the birth anniversary of noted Marathi litterateur V. V. Shirwadkar, popularly known as ‘Kusumagraj’ whose birthday falls on 27th February every year. 

Ayush Mohite - student of T.E. ExTC welcomed all the dignitaries, faculty members and students. Our Government has started celebrating the birth anniversary of Kusumagraj as 'Marathi Rajbhasha Gaurav Din' after the Jnanpeeth awardee's demise in 1999. 

From the year 2015 Government of Maharashtra - Marathi Language Section had instituted two special awards for individuals taking initiatives to promote Marathi literature. 

The Vinda Karandikar Lifetime Achievement Award is conferred to Shri. Ranganath Pathare - a noted Marathi writer. This award consists of a cash prize of Rs. 5 lakhs, a memento and a Citation. Pathare has penned several novels, including Tamrapat which won the prestigious Sahitya Academy award in 1999. His 700-page long Satpatil Kulvruttant novel was published last year and has been receiving accolades from readers as well as critics.

The Shri. P . Bhagwat Award will be given to Shabdalay Prakashan at Shrirampur in Ahmednagar. This award consists of a cash prize of Rs. 3 lakhs and a Citation.

As part of the celebration, many students recited their self written poems. The judges - Dr. Kavita Sonawane (HOD - Computer Engineering) and Asst. Prof. Sunil Pansare (In-Charge HOD - Mechanical Engineering) and the staff members were enthralled to know the Marathi language skills of today's generation. Sahil Sawant - a student of T.E. ExTC co-ordinated the session of poetry recitation. Manasvi Bhand - a student of T.E. ELEC promptly recited the poems of the persons who were not able to join the session online. This Virtual Celebration brought together young and creative minds whose mother tongue was not Marathi. The following are such students whose mother tongue is not Marathi but they recited their poems with equal command and excellence in Marathi language:

The judges expressed their views about Kusumagraj and shared their experiences with all the students and faculty members. They also encouraged students to improve their Marathi communication and learning skills.

As a special request from the hosts - Aayush Mohite and Sahil Sawant, Dr. Kavita Sonawane recited her poem - Mee Marathi Mazi Abhijaat Marathi. She had recited this poem for a contest organized by Ashwaghosh Kalakruti.

The Virtual Celebration ended with the video of Marathi Abhimaan Geet - a song written in Marathi by the noted poet Suresh Bhat and composed by well known composer Kaushal Inamdar.

Thank you for participating in the contest organized for the celebration of Marathi Bhasha Diwas 2019! And a Special Thanks to Shri. Tulshiram Kudale for the wonderful and poetic evening!!

We hope that the celebration was thoughtful and the contests worthy of participating. Our primary objective was to identify the "creative talents" in our Institute by way of this big day.

We do understand that you all were too busy in your routine jobs. So yes, we do appreciate the fact that a few of you (if not all) participated. Better some than none! 

You all were a wonderful group of participants and your positive spirit helped us make this celebration both productive and fun. Please feel free to share your feedback and gripes so that the same could be incorporated for the next year's celebration.

CELEBRATION OF MARATHI BHASHA DIWAS 2019 - Part 1

27 February is the birthday of Dnyanpeeth Award-winning author, playwright V. Shirewadkar alias Kavi Kusumagraj This day is celebrated worldwide as 'World Marathi Language Day'. Worshiping Kusumagraj, whose stylus has made a distinct impression in the literature of the country and the world!

कुसुमाग्रज वि.वा. शिरवाडकर यांचे खरे नांव गजानन रंगनाथ शिरवाडकर दत्तक गेल्यामुळे त्यांचे नांव विष्णु वामन शिरवाडकर झाले. २७ फेब्रुवारी १९१२ साली त्यांचा जन्म झाला. प्राथमिक शिक्षण पिपंळगाव येथे झाले. तर माध्यमिक शिक्षण नाशिक येथील न्यू इंग्लीश स्कुलमध्ये म्हणजे आजचे जे जु. स. रुंगठा विद्यालय आहे तेथे झाले. मॅट्रिक परिक्षा ते मुंबई विद्यापीठातून पास झाले.

१९३० साली हं. प्रा. ठाकरसी विद्यालयात ते होते तेव्हा 'रत्नाकर' मासिकातुन त्यांच्या कविता प्रसिध्द होत. अस्पृश्य समजल्या जाणार्‍या लोकांना काळाराम मंदिरात प्रवेश मिळावा म्हणून १९३२ साली जो सत्याग्रह झाला त्यात त्यांनी सहभाग घेतला होता, त्यामूळे बाल्यावस्थेतील त्यांच्या लिखाणाला प्रौढत्वाची लकाकी चढून हळूहळू त्यांच्या साहित्याने आकाशाला गवसणीच घातली. ज्यात त्यांनी फक्त कविताच नाही तर कथा, कादंबर्‍या, नाटके, ललित साहित्य याबरोबर प्रभा साप्ताहिक, प्रभात वृत्तपत्र, सारथी, धनुर्धारी व नवयुग यामध्ये पत्रकारिता पण केली. त्यांचा आवडता लेखक पी. जी. वुडहाऊस व आवडता नट चार्ली चाप्लिन होता. १९४२ साली प्रसिध्द झालेला 'विशाखा' हा काव्यसंग्रह म्हणजे मराठी वाङमयातील उच्च कोटीचे वैभव होय. जे आजही मराठी साहित्यप्रेमींना भुरळ घालते. 'मराठी माती', 'स्वागत', 'हिमरेषा' यांचबरोबर 'ययाती आणि देवयानी' व 'वीज म्हणाली धरतीला' ही नाटके १९६० ते १९६६ साली प्रसिध्द झाली. सार्‍या साहित्य कृतींना राज्य पुरस्कारांनी सन्मानित करण्यात आले आहे. १९४६ साली 'वैष्णव' ही कादंबरी व 'दूरचे दिवे' हे नाटक प्रसिध्द झाले. 'नटसम्राट' ही त्यांच्या लेखणीतून उतरलेली सर्वोत्कृष्ट कलाकृती तर होतीच पण त्याचे नाटयप्रयोगही खूप गाजले. नाटयवेडया मराठी रसिकांनी त्यांचे अभूतपूर्व स्वागत केले. अत्यंत नाजुक व भावुक विषयाला हाताळणारे हे नाटक वयोवृध्दांचा दृष्टीकोन बदलणारे ठरले कारण अनेक वृध्दांनी हे नाटक पाहिल्यावर आपले मृत्यूपत्र बदलले. तरूणांचाही वृध्दांकडे पहाण्याचा दृष्टीकोन बदलला. कुसुमाग्रज एक वेगळं व्यक्तिमत्व  त्यांच्या साहित्य प्रवासाबरोबर माणूस म्हणून त्याचं वेगळं व्यक्तिमत्व अभ्यासायचं तर अनेक पैलूनी ते पहावे लागेल. नाशिकमधील अनेक चळवळींचे ते प्रणेते होते. उदाहरणार्थ, त्यांनी लोकहितवादी मंडळ १९५० मध्ये सुरू केले. नाशिकच्या प्रसिध्द सार्वजनिक वाचनालयाचे ते १९६२ ते १९७२ पर्यंत अध्यक्ष होते. ते दशक वाचनालयाचे सुवर्णयुग म्हटले पाहीजे. सामाजिक वा वैयक्तिक अशा कुठल्याही प्रकल्पांना ते मार्गदर्शन करीत. कोणीही कुठल्याही प्रकारचे मार्गदर्शन मागण्यास आला तर क्षणात त्या व्यक्तीची क्षमता ओळखून ते मदत करीत. असं असूनही यश साजरं करतांना ते मागे राहणंच पसंत करत. साहित्यसूर्य मावळला  महाराष्ट्राच्या सांस्कृतिक जीवनात कुसुमाग्रजांच्या निधनाने जी पोकळी निर्माण झाली ती कधीच भरून निघणार नाही. नाशिककरांना तर आपल्या घरातील वडीलधारं माणूस गमावल्याचं दु:ख आहे. मानवतेचा कळवळा व मराठी भाषेवरचं प्रभुत्व यामुळेच 'नटसम्राट' व 'विशाखा' सारखे साहित्य जन्माला आले. एवढं उत्तुंग कर्तृत्व व अनेक पुरस्कारांनी सन्मानित व्यक्तिमत्व अत्यंत साधे तर होतेच पण शेवटपर्यंत अत्यंत नम्र व सत्कार्याला वाहून घेतलेले जीवन ते शेवटपर्यंत जगले. शिक्षणक्षेत्रात त्यांनी खूप मार्गदर्शन केले. आजची परीक्षा पध्दती मुलांसाठी निष्ठुर पध्दती आहे असे त्यांचे मत होते. इतरही अनेक क्षेत्रात त्यांनी लोकांना योग्य मार्ग दाखवले. त्यांचे घर म्हणजे तीर्थक्षेत्र झाले होते. त्यांच्या स्मृतिप्रित्यर्थ स्थापण्यात आलेल्या कुसुमाग्रज प्रतिष्ठानाचे समाजातील गरीब, गरजू व मागासलेल्या जनतेसाठी योगदान वाखाणण्यासारखे आहे.

Marathi Bhasha Diwas will be celebrated on 29 February 2019. A few contests have been organized for the occasion. All staff members and students are requested to participate in any one or all of the contests given below:

1. Spin a Story with 100 words: A story written by you and limited to 100 words only.
2. Pen a Poem: Poems penned by you are welcome!
3. Face-A-Book: A short summary of your favourite book which you think is a must-read for all.
4. Cook it Up: Forgotten recipes or your traditional recipes which are passed from one generation to the other.
5. Marathi Personalities: An introduction to all those Marathi people who have carved a niche in our hearts for themselves.

मराठी भाषा दिवस

दरवर्षीप्रमाणे मराठी भाषा दिवस येत्या २७ फेब्रुवारीला साजरा होणार आहे. त्यानिमित्ताने खालील काही स्पर्धांचे आयोजन करण्यात येत आहे. सर्व शिक्षक व विद्यार्थ्यांना विनंती आहे की त्यांनी खालील पैकी एका स्पर्धेत भाग घ्यावा:

१) शतशब्दकथा स्पर्धा: तुम्ही लिहिलेल्या कथेतील शब्द "१००" पर्यंत मर्यादित असावेत. 

२) कविता: अर्थात स्वतःची!

३) पुस्तक परिचय: तुम्ही वाचलेल्या व आवडलेल्या एखाद्या पुस्तकाचा परिचय

४) अन्न हे पूर्णब्रम्ह: विस्मरणात गेलेली किंवा तुमच्या घरातील पारंपरिक पाककृती

५) आम्ही मराठी: कला, विज्ञान व ईतर क्षेत्रातील मराठमोळी माणसं ह्यांबद्दल वाचावे असे काही
