Some publishers are
moving toward an open model, prompted by COVID-19.
The unrestricted
sharing of scientific papers during the coronavirus pandemic may have hastened
the shift toward more open-access publishing, scientists believe, as several
leading journals move to make content publicly available.
Following are some
Publishers:
Britain’s
Biochemical Society became the
latest organization to make all of its published content free to view, citing
the “extraordinary times with the current Covid-19 pandemic” as its reason for
lifting paywalls on its Portland Press imprint until further notice
Springer
Nature, announced on
April 8, to offer researchers a route to publishing open access in Nature and most Nature-branded journals
from 2021
Elsevier
title, Neuron, to demand a similar switch to open access.
Access Rare and Beautiful “Manuscripts of the Muslim
World” via UPenn’s Digital Library
This project offers over 500 manuscripts and 827 paintings that are “mostly unresearched.
All materials on OPenn are in the public domain or released under Creative Commons licenses as Free Cultural Works.
The MMW Project characterizes these materials as
“mostly unresearched,” perhaps encouraging a curious army of sequestered
armchair historians to dig into this wealth more than 500 manuscripts and 827
paintings from the Islamicate world broadly construed.

Coronavirus in Mumbai: Engineering student develops portable ventilator with material available at home
COVID-19
positive patients are rising in the state and Mumbai and ventilators will be in
great need. In a bid to help the society in this crisis, an engineering
student, Trilok Sawant from Kandivali (East), Thakur Village, has prepared a
portable ventilator, with things available in his house. This small, palm-sized
machine is automatic and patients can use it themselves at home.
After hearing about Trilok's invention of ‘Spandan’, the low cost
automatic portable ventilator, North Mumbai BJP MP Gopal Shetty visited his
residence yesterday morning to see the invention. “When I visited Trilok's place
to see the handy ventilator, Dr Bipin Doshi and an experienced mechanical
engineer were also with me to evaluate the ventilator. They also said that this
ventilator would be very useful to the country in the present situation. I will
help him financially and in other ways required to encourage his talent and
hard work and will make him a part of the Make in India project," said
Gopal Shetty.
