 READING INSPIRATION DAY 2021

We salute APJ Abdul Kalam and celebrate his monumental achievements as a Scientist, Scholar and the President of India. We fondly remember his passion for teaching education and for reading. Dr. Kalam truly ignited young minds with the power to think and innovate. Dr. Kalam is not with us today but his thoughts, ideals and vision for India live on forever.

As part of the virtual celebrations, the library conducted the following two events in collaboration with the NDLI Club:

  1. Online Quiz on the Life and Times of Dr. A.P. J. Abdul Kalam

  2. Online Book Review Competition

  3. Book Exhibition for the faculty members of SFIT

24 students participated in the Online Quiz conducted as part of the Reading Inspiration Day.

Online Book Review Contest


Book Exhibition: 160 books were kept in the exhibition.

22 books were selected by faculty members (Ms. Josna Jose and Ms. Varsha Thandasarry) of the Electrical Engineering Department for their Departmental Library from the Book Exhibition.

 READING INSPIRATION DAY 2020


LIRC celebrates Reading Inspiration Day or Waachan Prerana Diwas every year on 15 October to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam – our ex-President and the Missile Man of India. Every year, we organize various activities such as Exhibition of books and Take Away of Donated books. 

This year due to the COVID 19 lockdown, we  conducted an Online Quiz which judged the respondent’s knowledge through guessing the book by the given description. 61 responses were received. The favourite genre of books was Fiction followed by True Stories and Autobiographies. Many varied book recommendations were received which we will compile and a selected few will be soon added to the library’s collection. A big thank you to Asso. Prof. Bidisha Roy (CMPN) and Asst. Prof. Jovita Serrao (ExTC) for the creative digital bookmarks.

Reading Inspiration Week 8 to 15 October 2018: Report

To commemorate the birth anniversary of our Ex.President and Visionary Scientist, Late Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam on 15th October, the Learning and Information Resource Centre is organizing the following activities:

An Inhouse exhibition of a variety of books on subjects other than engineering such as Psychology, Presentation Skills, Management, Leadership.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

A few CDs received along with books and magazines were kept for “Take Away” for the benefit of members. As many as 72 CDs were taken by students

 

Our faculty members, students - both current and alumni are gracious book donors, thereby refreshing our collection. Thanks to all of them! We continued with their legacy by making these books available “free of cost” to anyone who visited the library on that day. A total of 255 books were displayed and all these books were happily carried by our students and staff members.


28 books from the Book Bank were kept for sale at a minimum cost for the benefit of our members.









8 books on the theme Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam were kept on display. Many students borrowed the books inspired by the life of the great scientist of India.

Celebration of Reading Inspiration Day 2017 - Report

The Library of St. Francis Institute of Technology celebrated 15th October 2015 as the Reading Inspiration Day for the first time.

The former President of India, Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam 's birth anniversary is observed as 'Vaachan Prerna Din' (Reading Inspiration Day) across Maharashtra, every year. The key objective of the initiative is to ensure that students get inspired by the late Dr. Kalam's distinguished life.

About Dr. Kalam:

Born on 15th October 1931 at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, specialized in Aeronautical Engineering from Madras Institute of Technology. Dr. Kalam made significant contribution as Project Director to develop India's first indigenous Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV-III) which successfully injected the Rohini satellite in the near earth orbit in July 1980 and made India an exclusive member of Space Club.
In his literary pursuit four of Dr. Kalam's books - "Wings of Fire", "India 2020 - A Vision for the New Millennium", "My journey" and "Ignited Minds - Unleashing the power within India" have become household names in India and among the Indian nationals abroad. These books have been translated in many Indian languages.

Dr. Kalam is one of the most distinguished scientists of India with the unique honour of receiving honorary doctorates from 30 universities and institutions. He has been awarded the coveted civilian awards - Padma Bhushan (1981) and Padma Vibhushan (1990) and the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna (1997). He is a recipient of several other awards and Fellow of many professional institutions.

Dr. Kalam became the 11th President of India on 25th July 2002. His focus is on transforming India into a developed nation by 2020.

Reading helps everyone to grow mentally, emotionally & psychologically & open the doors of new knowledge to enlighten the mind. 

As part of the celebrations, the Learning and Information Resource Centre (Central Library) initiated a few activities as outlined below:

1) Take Away of Books

2) Take Away of CDs

3) Book Exhibition

 

1) Book Exhibition: In-House book exhibition was organized on the Theme was Biographies and Autobiographies to make our library users aware of the wide variety of books in this genre. Most of the books authored by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam were borrowed by students on the spot.

 

2) Take Away of Books: 240 books donated by gracious people to our library were kept for Pick and Choose for our enthusiastic readers. 188 books were taken by them.

 

3) Take Away of Book Bank books: 7 out of 8 Book Bank books were taken by students for study purposes.

 

4) Take Away of CDs: 242 CDs out of 251 CDs were taken by students thus making this event a huge success.

“Vaachan Prerana Diwas‟ was celebrated at St Francis Institute of Technology to commemorate the birth anniversary (October 15) of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. As part of the celebrations, the library organized an “Exhibition of Books‟ and “Take Away‟ of selected books and magazines. The library received a very good response from students and staff as there were around 150 visitors. The Book Exhibition covered books on a variety of topics to meet the varied interests of the students and staff community. The library and the staff was happy organizing this event and marked the “Vaachan Prerana Diwas‟ by offering a tribute to the vision and knowledge of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.
