TCS to hire 40,000 freshers from campuses this year with AI skills expected at all levels, CHRO says: Report
Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS) plans to hire 40,000 freshers from campuses this year, the IT giant's Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) Milind Lakkad said.He added that despite the quarterly headcount fluctuations, TCS manages through a combination of “employees on the bench, ongoing productivity enhancements, and other operational adjustments.”(Representational Image/Mint)
This however, comes at a time when its headcount had decreased by over 5,000 employees in the third quarter of the financial year 2024-25.
“In any given quarter, changes in headcount don't always reflect growth or demand because our hiring plans are structured on an annual basis,” TCS Lakkad said in an interview with Business Standard.
He added that despite the quarterly headcount fluctuations, TCS manages through a combination of “employees on the bench, ongoing productivity enhancements, and other operational adjustments.”
Lakkad said that the company is increasingly integrating the use of artificial intelligence (AI) into various functions and that it is an important skill to have across all levels of the hierarchy such as E0, E1, E2, E3, and so on in what has been described as a “pyramid with different skill sets.”
Even for the entry-level E0 tier, TCS expects employees to have a foundational understanding of large language models (LLMs) and their applications.
At the E1 level, employees have to be able to work with LLM APIs, which is a skill set similar to that of prompt engineers.
At E2, employees have to use TCS GenAI tools.
At levels E3 and above, TCS expects by default, advanced expertise in AI and its applications across various domains.
However, Lakkad said that while AI is certain to transform jobs, it will more likely change the nature of the roles rather than eliminate them altogether.
“AI will enhance efficiency, but humans will continue to play a crucial role—especially in client-facing and knowledge-intensive roles, where the value of human insight and empathy remains irreplaceable,” he added.
He also said that degrees are a must as they provide foundational understanding necessary for the broader demands of the services industry as TCS requires “more than just coding skills.”

How Is TCS Helping With COVID-19 Testing In India
COVID-19 cases have only been on the rise, and with the non-availability of effective drugs and vaccines, one of the effective ways to control it is to detect it early in patients. However, the task is easier said than done. While a large number of test kits are being produced, they are not enough to conduct it in large numbers. Government-run bodies such as C-CAMP or Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platform have been a key enabler in driving COVID-19 testing as it has been aggressively building, managing and scaling the ecosystem of MSMEs to produce COVID-19 test kits indigenously. However, they might not be enough.
To scale up this production of test kits to a million test kits a day, TCS has come up with a solution to support C-CAMP in achieving that. In a recent announcement, TCS said that it had deployed a blockchain-based digital supply chain platform to drive the ambitious new project launched by C-CAMP.

TCS to Power New Government Initiative to Double India’s Covid-19 Testing Capacity through Supply Chain Solution
TCS through its supply chain solution is helping the Indian Government’s C-CAMP build, manage and scale an ecosystem of MSMEs to indigenously produce a million Covid-19 test kits a day
TCS recently announced that it has deployed a blockchain-based digital supply chain platform that powers an ambitious new project launched by the Government of India’s Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms (C-CAMP) to scale up indigenous Covid-19 diagnostic test-kit production capacity to a million test kits a day.
C-CAMP’s newly launched project, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, is called Indigenisation of Diagnostics (InDx), and aims to build a robust, scalable supply-chain ecosystem of Indian MSMEs capable of producing large quantities of reagents and other components needed for RT-qPCR-based and other diagnostic test kits for Covid-19. The project entails eliminating supply-chain bottlenecks, and handholding MSMEs to help them bridge capability gaps, meet necessary quality standards and expand capacities to be able to indigenously produce a million test kits a day.
As C-CAMP’s technology partner, TCS has developed and deployed a dynamic digital supply-chain platform to manage the MSME ecosystem, powered by the TCS Data Marketplace solution. The solution enables organizations to embrace new ecosystem-based business models, giving them the ability to democratize data and monetize it to create value. It facilitates standardized, controlled data exchanges across ecosystem participants with the necessary security and privacy protection, using blockchain at the back-end to ensure the immutability of audit logs, says a statement from the company.
This capability has been harnessed in the InDx project to build a supply-chain platform that aggregates test kit supply data of Tier 2 and 3 manufacturers of kits, enzymes, primers and antibodies, and provides ready visibility to Tier 1 suppliers as well as to C-CAMP on supplier-specific quality levels, capacities and inventories across the ecosystem, enabling the latter to respond to the demand for those test kits from the Government as testing programs are ramped up across the country.
“As a purpose-driven organization, we are delighted to partner with C-CAMP in this bold new initiative to scale up India’s testing capacity, and make Covid-19 testing accessible to every Indian who needs it. The TCS Data Marketplace solution is the lynchpin that anchors InDx’s supplier ecosystem of micro, small and medium enterprises, democratizing supplier data, enhancing supply-chain visibility, and driving superior outcomes for all stakeholders. The success of this initiative sets an example for how ecosystem-based partnerships can be put to work for other mission-mode programs of national importance,” said Dinanath Kholkar, global head – analytics and insights, TCS.

Infosys, TCS enjoy best prospects to deliver growth outperformance
Overall our price targets for 5 top-tier companies rise by 2-10%, as a result of the changes.

Our recent meetings with Infosys & Wipro and channel checks suggest a mixed picture with rising risks in BFSI but continued overall deal momentum for select companies. Benefit of recent INR-USD depreciation will be offset to some extent by cross ccy headwinds. We expect continued divergent growth across companies with Infosys best placed in the near term. Amidst our positive stance towards IT services as a relative defensive, TCS & TechM are our other Buys.
Infosys best placed near-term, on both growth & margin
We maintain near-term visibility is best for Infosys amongst top-tier companies given its strong deal win momentum. We expect revenue growth for FY20e to surprise positively at 11.5% y-o-y constant ccy vs. its latest guidance of 8.5-10%. This implies 11% y-o-y growth for rest of FY20e. Despite visible margin pressures across companies in Q1, we also expect Infosys’ FY20e Ebit margin to meet the mid-point of its guided range at 22%, implying 22.5% for rest of FY20e.
Adjusting estimates, PT for ccy & other factors
We adjust our estimates to factor in weaker INR vs. USD but stronger cross currency headwinds. We temper our growth expectations for FY20e in some cases to reflect rising macro risks. We also introduce FY22e estimates and roll forward our price targets. We raise valuation multiple for Infosys as we expect its discount to TCS to narrow. Overall our price targets for 5 top-tier companies rise by 2-10%, as a result of the changes.
Infosys, TCS remain preferred picks
We maintain our positive stance on Indian IT services as a relative defensive. TCS & Infosys remain our preferred picks as we believe these are best placed to deliver growth outperformance, which should also drive better margin defence. We believe risk-reward is favourable for Tech Mahindra given improving communications outlook – recent large AT&T deal will add. Despite its recent deal win momentum, we maintain Hold on HCL Tech given risks from high inorganic contribution. Maintain U/P on Wipro given consistent growth underperformance.

US tech firms dominate top 10 green card application list
US-based technology companies such as Amazon, Cognizant, Cisco, Facebook and Google have together filed more green card applications, or those seeking talented immigrants with permanent residency to work in their offices in the United States, according to the US Department of Labor data.
The Department of Labor follows an October to September calendar year.
Amazon has filed 1,500 applications, the largest among the ten companies. Cognizant Technology Services, a US-headquartered IT services firm that has a large employee base in India, is second with more than 1,300 employer green card applications, followed by Cisco. TCS, with 1,009 applications comes fourth on that list, while Infosys is in seventh position, according to the data. It is as yet unclear how many of these applications will convert into permanent residency permits.
Amazon, Cisco, TCS, Infosys, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple and Deloitte — all of which figure in the top 10 — declined to comment.
A spokesperson for Cognizant said it consistently sponsors employees in “securing legal permanent residence in the US precisely because they are highly-skilled, highly-educated knowledge professionals who are valuable assets to our company and clients.”
The National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom), the industry lobby group for Indian IT, said the data supports its contention that there is a shortage of skilled talent in the US and that American companies are hiring people from where it is available the most —India. “While it is a company’s decision on how it wants to recruit and retain talent, this is a reflection of the talent shortage with low unemployment rates and an increased demand for digital skills,” said Shivendra Singh, vice-president of the global trade department at Nasscom.
US grants H-1B visas to highly skilled people for a period of three years. This can be extended for a similar term. Most workers apply for a green card or permanent resident status towards the end of their H-1B visa tenure.

The application enables them to stay and work in the US legally while it is in process.
Companies are required to pay for a worker’s H-1B visa application, but the responsibility for a green card rests with the individual. However, many companies apply for an I-140 or Immigrant Petition for Alien Worker to retain a highly valued or skilled resource.
A prospective employer submits the Form I-140 to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to petition for an alien to work in the US on a permanent basis.
Currently, it takes an Indian applicant more than eight years to receive permanent resident status. It is estimated that up to 300,000 Indians could benefit if the Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act or HR 1044 is passed by the US Senate.

TCS becomes third most-valued IT company in the world
Valued at $26.3 billion, Accenture took the title of the world's most-valued IT services brand. The tag was previously held by IBM, which now occupied the second place with a brand value of $20.4 billion, according to the report.
"Holding steady in third place is India's largest IT services conglomerate, TCS, up 23% to $12.8 billion, with a value bolstered by the brand's disciplined focus on the market's increased demand for digital services," it added.
Brand Finance said TCS is also the first Indian IT services brand to achieve success in the Japanese market and has positioned itself as a leader in providing a superior all-round customer experience, leveraging artificial intelligence and robotic automation across its transformation programmes.
Wipro entered the top-10 list for the first time this year, said the report, which was released at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland.
"Up 25% to $4 billion, Wipro's significant investments in digital transformation capabilities, niche acquisitions, and a recent brand refresh, have propelled it to be the third fastest-growing brand in the segment," the report noted.
American brand Cognizant (brand value up 12% to $8.7 billion) and India's Infosys (brand value up 8% to $6.5 billion) held onto their last year's ranking of fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
The report pointed out that although Cognizant is headquartered in New Jersey, US, it holds a major employee base in Chennai and has offices in Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune, and Cochin.
Others in the top-10 list included Capgemini, DXC Technology and NTT Data.
"There is a reason why Bangalore is known as the Silicon Valley of India. As more IT services brands ramp up their outsourcing outposts across the country, it is the skilled workforce, world class facilities and infrastructure that makes India such an attractive location and ultimately a global powerhouse," Brand Finance Chief Executive Officer David Haigh said.
The index is based on Brand Finance's analysis of marketing investments, stakeholder equity and business performance of these companies.
"2018 was a year of celebrations at TCS, marking the completion of five decades of industry-leading customer satisfaction, business performance, and community impact," TCS Chief Marketing Officer Ravi Viswanathan said in a statement.
He added that the past year was characterised by momentum and milestones for TCS, including reaching $100 billion in market capitalisation, and securing record-level new customer partnerships in digital services.
"As we further bolster our innovation ecosystem and capabilities for the digital era, we are confident that our brand value will go from strength and strength," he added. SR HRS
